Finding RTOs for the disability sector

This case study highlights guiding principles for creating partnerships with RTOs to train workers and build recruitment pathways.  Cara, one of South Australia’s largest disability service providers, partners with a small number of RTOs to address significant workforce shortages and challenges in meeting some training requirements, such as supervision of vocational placements

Key Insights include:

  • Researching different RTOs, including speaking with other employers who have worked with them, can help with selecting ones best aligned to an organisation’s skills needs and values, as not all RTOs have the same approach or specialties.
  • Partnering with a small number of RTOs can help create diverse, tailored training to meet the organisation’s skills needs.
  • Flexible delivery options, such as face to face classes, online, and blended learning creates better access for shift staff.
  • Establishing clear agreement and understanding of practical matters, such as role clarity, processes for tracking and reporting learner progress, providing student support, feedback mechanisms, and open, proactive communication, will help create effective working relationships between the organisation and RTOs.
