Aged Care Career Opportunity for Aboriginal People – Launch into Work)

The Australian Unity Launch into Work program was designed with VTEC (Real Futures), Aboriginal Training Pathways (NSW TAFE) and NSW Department of Industry Mentoring programs (NCAP and The Way Ahead).

The project was funded through the Australian Government’s Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business Launch into Work program.

The objective of the project was to identify job seekers with the right values and attributes to work in Aged Care and provide targeted training, work experience and mentoring to support  to increase their skills, experience and confidence. Australian Unity committed to employing all participants who successfully complete the project.

Through the project,  14 Aboriginal people pursued a career in the aged care sector through an innovative pre-employment pathway.

The participants, who had no previous experience in the aged care sector, completed the 10-week Launch into Work pre-employment project–graduating with a Certificate II qualification.

This innovative initiative helped address the challenges of the significant aged care workforce shortage, while creating a pathway into employment for Aboriginal people in regional and metropolitan areas of NSW.

All participants who successfully completed continued on to employment as Trainee Care Workers with Australian Unity and completed a Certificate III qualification while working.
